Baby attacked by raccoons remains critical

A 9-month-old baby remains in critical condition and will have to receive rabies vaccinations after being attacked in her crib by two raccoons early Wednesday morning.

Although both raccoons were shot by deputies from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, only one of the animals was recovered from the scene. That raccoon was sent to Atlanta for testing and came back negative for rabies.

There was a large amount of blood leading to a pile of debris where both animals fled that night, and, although only the live raccoon was captured, Newton County Animal Control Director Teri Key-Hoosen reportedly told authorities that she believed the other animal could not have survived after loosing that much blood. However, since one raccoon involved in the attack is unaccounted for, the baby will have to undergo rabies treatment which involves a series of injections.

The sheriff’s office is still investigating the incident, including whether or not the family had been feeding the raccoons or keeping them as pets.
