BOE District 5 Winner: Abigail Morgan-Coggin

By Brittany Thomas/

Abigail Morgan-Coggin's son Shaw had a request for his mother. If she won the election for the District 5 seat for the Newton County Board of Education, he wanted every Friday to be pizza Friday at school and for the day after Halloween to be declared a school holiday. With her win Tuesday night, she'll be able to take his requests before the rest of the board when she takes office in January.

Morgan-Coggin, a Republican, ran against Democrat Sharon Sawyer, and was vocal about her hopes to be active in the same school system that her son attends and that her daughter will attend, and through that involvement, to provide all students in Newton County with the best education possible.

On her campaign website she says "A well-rounded education for all Newton County students is important to me. I wholeheartedly believe that basic education is key in the development of our next generation. If a child can read, he/she will be able to accomplish anything set before him/her. I ask that you join me in expressing your concerns to our elected officials."

Morgan-Coggin received 3,555 votes to Sawyer's 1,953.

"I am overwhelmed by my supporters who came out to vote for me. Thank you!" said Coggin. "I will work hard to make you proud. I am also looking forward to working with the other school board members, administrators, teachers, students and parents as we work together to make the our schools the best in the state and nation. This most definitely cannot be done alone. It will take eve ryone in our community working together to accomplish this goal and together we can."
