Voter turnout good, no problems at polls

Nearly 10,000 residents vote early

Newton County is having good voter turnout and no significant problems have been reported at precincts as of this afternoon said Elections Supervisor Donna Morrison.

She said she couldn't estimate the total turnout at this point in time, but precinct workers were reporting good turnouts.

A total of 8,701 ballots were cast in office during the early voting period that began Sept. 20 and ended Friday. A total of 1,369 absentee ballots were mailed out. Newton County has a total of 61,548 registered voters.

A total of 19,858 Newton County residents voted in the 2006 election, or 40 percent of the 49,362 registered voters. Officials hope early voting, which was only available for one week before the election in 2006, will help bolster those numbers.
