Screening starts today in principal search

It's been less than two weeks after the shocking resignation of popular Newton High School Principal Dr. Roderick Sams, and the school system is confident they can find his replacement by the end of the month amid the batch of hopefuls that have applied for the position.

According to Newton County School Superintendent Dr. Gary Mathews, the system had 31 candidates for the position as of Friday morning. An e-mail from Mathews said that a screening committee would decide "who and how many candidates to interview on Monday afternoon, September 13." Interviews of the finalists will be conducted on Sept. 20, with the final nominee presented to the board at the Sept. 21 board of education meeting.

In the search for Newton High's next principal, a new set of administrative procedures for screening and interviewing candidates was followed. According to Mathews' e-mail, the new set of procedures has been in effect since July and was used in selecting new principals for Clements Middle School and Livingston Elementary School earlier this year.

Sams cited "personal issues" in his resignation.
