Denny Dobbs Park grand opening set for Saturday

The Rev. Ronny Brannen of Prospect United Methodist Church is excited about the opening of Denny Dobbs Park and he's doing his best to make sure everyone knows it.

Prospect is hosting the park's grand opening ceremony from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday at the park, located on Georgia Highway 212 across from Oak Hill Elementary School.

The church and several area businesses will provide free door prizes, games and snacks at the event.

"I think it will be an exciting thing for people in the community who won't have to travel so far to have (an) outdoor rec facility," Brannen said. "It's also a place for picnics and kids to play. I think kids need to be out there playing more and spend a whole lot of time outdoors. It's a way to promote outside activities and family togetherness."

He said the church plans to use the park for its activities, and he hopes many others will also take advantage of its features.

Activities at the grand opening will include face painting, balloons, pickup basketball and kickball, music and fair games. Snacks like popcorn, cotton candy and snow cones will likely be sold for 25 or 50 cents, and meals with hot dogs, chips and drinks will be sold for about $3.

Some of the businesses that have donated door prizes are Nabtech Inc, Ivy League Trophies and Awards, MoonScapes Lawn Maintenance, Great Clips, Gordy Tile Company, Newton Electric Supply, Oak Hill Animal Hospital, Game Spot, the Subway in Newton Plaza, Kroger, Alarm Pro, Printability Signs, Richards Chapel United Methodist Church, World of Wings, Suncrest Home Health and Lost County Haunted House.

"We want this to be for the kids. We've said at the church that children are a priority for us, so we want to do anything we can do to be a blessing to them," Brannen said.

A dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 3 p.m., Friday at the park. Several community leaders will speak at the event.
