Dale M. Thompson said that his decision to run for the Newton County Board of Education District 1 seat, being vacated by Johnny Smith, was due to a lack of candidates with his level of experience having qualified in the district.

"I really didn’t see any candidates out there that have my experience or really had my children’s schools at heart," said Thompson who said his family lived across the street from East Newton Elementary School.

"I feel that our children’s education is crucial to the future of this county and as a parent of two children in the system I feel the need to become further involved and do everything that I can to ensure their education," he said.

Thompson said that his 24 years of corporate financial experience, optimistic attitude and his ability to work with the other board members to resolve issues are just some of the things he hopes to bring to the board if elected.

He said that he believes the top issues facing District 1 in the coming years are the reduced funding from state and local sources while enrollment continues to grow, insuring a quality education for all students while reducing the number of teachers and support staff and middle school sports programs.

Thompson is a graduate of Auburn University where he has a bachelor’s degree in finance. He is employed by Pratt Industries in Conyers as a senior financial analyst. He serves as treasurer at First Baptist Church in Covington and his wife Sherri is on the PTO Executive Board at East Newton Elementary. His daughter Hannah is a student at Indian Creek Middle School and his son Ross is in third grade at East Newton.
