There will be laughs

Those tired of the banality of summer reality programs, but still in need of soap opera hijinks, can thank the New Depot Players, who will be presenting "The Great American Trailer Park Musical" premiering at 8 p.m. July 16. Here, audiences can enrich their imaginations and still be highly entertained.

"The Great American Trailer Park Musical" was written by David Nehls and Betsy Kelso and directed by Jay Tryall with musical direction by Jonathan Sparks. The play is a two-act musical that promises loads of trailer-trash hilarity.

The story follows trailer park resident Jeannie, who deals with her agoraphobia — the fear of public embarrassment, characterized by avoiding public places — by using daytime talk shows to help boost her insecurities. Her husband Norbert, irritated and neglected by his wife, develops a relationship with Pippi, the local stripper who also has moved in across the street.

The New Depot Players website includes some sample dialogue between Pippi and Norbert:

Pippi: "Do you have any idea what it’s like to make your living by collecting dollar bill after dollar bill after dollar bill?"

Norbert: "Yes, I’m a toll collector."

Needless to say, comically-timed hysteria ensues.

The New Depot Players has been the resident theatre troupe of the Conyers/Rockdale community since 1976. The troupe puts on four shows in a season, including one musical. Over the years, they have performed works from decorated playwrights like Tennessee Williams, Stephen Sondheim, Rogers & Hammerstein and Neil Simon.

According to their website, the New Depot Players encourages participation from the local community in hopes to "provide opportunities for community enrichment through participation, education and exposure to live theatre."

General admission is $20 and $16 for students and seniors. The show will be performing on July 16, 17 and 18 (matinee show), July 22 to 24 and July 29 to 31. For more information, visit www.thenewdepotplayers.com.
