Toney D. Collins is running for the BOE because he wants to have a say in the changes affecting his teacher wife and his two school-aged children.

His wife, Kristina, is a math teacher at Newton High School and has kept Collins informed on this year’s budget discussions, he said.

"A lot of the changes are happening right now, and I wish I was there to have a choice and influence the changes," he said. "I want to be involved in the next round of discussions; I think I bring a lot to the table."

Collins said one of his goals is to improve parent-teacher relationships.

"I think we’ve gotten away from some of those things. We really need to push those relationships, so we know each other and can work together," Collins said.

Another concern for Collins are the budget cuts — he wants to make cuts affect the actual education of children as little as possible.

"We have to make choices, and some of them will be very hard. We have to look at every alternative to avoid cutting the things that will directly affect the kids classroom learning. That includes getting rid of teachers – we have to start in other areas," he said.

Collins has been an operations officer in the air force for 2.5 years. His job is to oversee about 70 troops and the day-to-day operations at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Cobb County, including supplies, transportation, traffic management including loading and unloading planes, the readiness section involving deploying troops and fueling.

Collins has served in the armed forces for a total of 15 years, including some time in U.S. Army. He said his greatest honor was serving as an officer in charge during Pres. Obama’s inauguration. He has traveled oversees several times and helped support Operation Noble Eagle, related to homeland security.

For 10 of his 15 years, Collins was a National Guard reservist. During that time he worked several jobs in corporate America, including two years as a General Manager of Bally’s Total Fitness, one year doing business-to-business sales for Verizon Wireless and five years at UPS.

Collins has an associate degree in radiologic technology from the Community College of the Air Force, a bachelor’s degree in business administration from St. Leo University and a master’s degree in education from Touro University International in California.

Collins was born in Anniston, Ala., but has lived in Georgia for the past nearly 14 years. He has volunteered as a sports coach for the Newton County Recreation Commission and volunteered as a soccer coach at the Covington YMCA.

He has also assisted his wife by speaking to classes and mentoring students. He has two sons, Toney Collins II, 12, and Ty, 4.
