Social Circle Board of Education Meeting Briefs

• The BOE accepted a bid from Covington Windows for $311,388.84 for janitorial services for next year. The school outsourced janitorial services as a cost cutting major.

• The council tabled discussion of the changes to the FY11 calendar, stating that once funds and grants became more clear, the final calendar would be decided on. The school is looking to cut five days from their academic calendar as a cost-cutting measure, but may not need to if funds permit.

• The school system adopted textbooks from Glencoe McGraw Hill to serve as new language arts textbooks. School systems are required every seven years to adopt a new textbook. At this time, no new books will be purchased. The books were approved by the board members and by all the language arts teachers.

• The school system will need to choose by 2013 if they wish to become part of the Charter Schools system, part of the IE Squared system, or if they wish to maintain their status quo. The BOE plans to hold a work session later in the summer to discuss the issue further. According to Superintendant Dr. Bettye Ray, the group is currently considering IE Squared.
