Championship shootout held at South River Gun Club this weekend

 Top guns from the Atlanta area are competing head-to-head against the best "run and gun" shooters in the South this weekend at the South River Gun Club. The shooters are competing for regional titles in the 2010 U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s (USPSA) Area 6 Handgun Championship sponsored by Glock.

 Approximately 350 are have participated in the competition, which ends today. Atlanta area shooters are Jason, Koon, Chris Patty and Michael Timokhin of Alpharetta, Roman Rheingans-Carrion of Atlanta, Alan Adamson of Buford, William Dobbs and Gene Gammill of Canton, Kevin Allen of Chamblee, Craig Carder, Brian and Melita Ellington and Allen Payne of Conyers, Michael Wasielewski of Covington, Larry Nied and Robert Sinclair Sr. of Doraville, Rob Lane and William Noyes of Fayetteville, John Wren of Flowery Branch, Brian Hicks and Ron Lauer of Gainesville, Leonard Johnson of Griffin, John Lindsey of Hampton, Martin Robbins of Jasper, G L Hansbrough of Kennesaw, Michael Stevenson of LaGrange, Lyle Usry of Lithonia, Erik Kopp of Locust Grove, Keith Butler of Marietta, Billy Abbate and Michael Daniels of McDonough, Mark Ramsey of Newnan, Charles Ferree Jr. and Boris Zaretsky of Norcross, Bob Kattness, Brian Ozment, Carl Rainey and Kenneth Wilcox of Peachtree City, Matthew Sharp of Roswell, Scott Gilbertson, John Golson, Tony Marcellino, Kattiya Sattham and Brian Thompson of Smyrna, Ken Vargo and Gregory Zinn of Snellville, Kaci Cochran of Stockbridge, Gerard Gingco, Allan Parrish and Ron Stegall of Sugar Hill, Peter Oliver of Suwanee, Katie Harris of Taylorsville and Grant and Randy Arrowood of Tyrone.

 Also among the local shooters are three members of the factory shooting team sponsored by Smyrna-based firearms maker Glock, and each will be defending their 2009 titles. Team captain David Sevigny of Smyrna won the production division title in 2009 and has won titles in 2008, 2005 and 2003. Jessie Abbate of McDonough took the Women’s Limited division crown in 2009 while Randi Rogers of Marietta captured the Limited-10 title in 2009.

 The USPSA Area 6 Championship is one of the largest regional competitions in the country and the first of the shooting season. The Area 6 region consists of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, but shooters from 21 other states as well as Austria and Canada will compete.

 The sport of practical shooting is a dynamic, action-oriented competitive shooting discipline incorporating skill, precision and speed shooting, all while on the move. During the match, competitors will navigate a series of obstacles laid out over 12 stages, or courses of fire, designed to simulate potential real-world scenarios. Shooters are scored on both speed and accuracy. More than 95,000 rounds will be fired downrange in the quest for the Open, Limited, Limited-10, Production, Revolver and Single Stack division titles.
