Simmons plans to seek reelection

/

County commissioner Earnest Simmons formally announced his intentions to seek re-election for District 2 in 2010.

Flanked by supporters, Simmons announced his decision Saturday afternoon on the steps of the historic Newton County courthouse.

Simmons said that his goals for his next term, should he win re-election, were to see the completion of both Denny Dobbs Park and the Porter Memorial Library. He also hoped to have satellite offices of the tax commissioner and sheriff’s office set up in District 2 as well.

"My goal is to get these things accomplished," he said.

Simmons was first elected to the board of commissioners in 2006. He is originally from Florida, where he attended Jones College. He has worked with several well-known organizations such as Greyhound, Emory University, Coca-Cola and The AriZona Beverage Company.

Since being elected as a county commissioner Simmons has attended classes in government leadership, ethics, public speaking, budget management and law and government.
