Covington Lions Club to host 38th Annual Chicken Barbecue cookout

For nearly four decades the arrival of spring has meant it was almost time for the annual Covington Lions Chicken Barbecue.

From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 14 Lions will be serving plates of scrumptious barbecue at Academy Springs Pavilion Park on Conyers Street. Plate are $7 and include half of a barbecued chicken, Cole slaw, bread, chips and iced tea. Desserts will be available for a donation.

Businesses can place multiple orders for employees and orders with more than 25 plates can be delivered.

Proceeds from the barbecue event will benefit Lions-supported organizations such as the Georgia Lighthouse Foundation (provides community vision screening and literature), the Emory Children’s Eye Center (offers cutting-edge genetic research and operations for children), Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind and Dyslexic (provides personal growth experiences for children, teens and adults with visual impairments through the use of recreation, education, socialization and rehabilitation in an outdoor setting), Leader Dogs for the Blind, Lions Club International Foundation, The Georgia Lions All State Band, Girls & Boys State, and six Scholarships to two graduating seniors from Alcovy, Eastside and Newton high schools.

Lions will collect unused eyeglasses, cell phones and hearing aids at the door as well.

The Lions also have partnered with the Miracle Field League of Newton County in their efforts to obtain monetary donations toward the construction of a local Miracle Field — a specialized rubber-turf baseball field for the mentally and physically challenged children of our area. The Lions have dedicated their October "Sherman’s Last Burning" two-day event toward the Miracle Field.

Tickets for the Chicken Barbecue can be purchased from any Lion or at the door on the day of the event. Call (770) 860-1414 to place company orders. More information about the Covington Lions and their upcoming events can be found at www.covingtongalion.org.
