‘Swinging for Sight’

The Oxford Lions Club is hosting its first golf tournament, “Swinging for Sight” on March 26 at the Oaks Golf Course. The entry fee of $75 for each player includes green fee, cart, lunch, beverages and prizes. There is a $10,000 prize for a hole-in-one on a par 3 hole.  Lunch and registration begin at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. All  of the proceeds from the event will raise funds for sight-related charities supported by the club.
Sight preservation has been a major emphasis of Lion Clubs International since Helen Keller requested that they become “Knights of the Blind” in the 1920s. The Oxford Lions have supported sight projects since their club was chartered in 1951. Currently, they continue to collect glasses for recycling, provide eye exams and glasses for both children and adults in financial need, provide vision screening at community events and raise funds for other sight projects. The Georgia Lions Lighthouse and the Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind are supported by Lions in Georgia and provide services to thousands of Georgians. The Lighthouse alone provided more than $70,000 worth of services to citizens of Newton County last year mainly through eye surgeries. The Camp for the Blind in Waycross is a wonderful opportunity for both children and adults who are visually impaired to experience the independence and adventures of a camp setting taken for granted by those with sight. All of the sight projects The Lions support can provide life-changing benefits to those who need them.
The Oxford Lions have raised funds for these and other community projects over the years with mop and broom sales, calendar and cookbook sales and their annual Pancake Supper (Feb. 26).
The Oxford Lions are planning a day of fun and prizes and need participants and sponsors to sign up before March 1. Call Todd Sherman at (770) 500-6552 or Nancy Henderson at (770) 786-4896.
