Former resident wins national science award

Jeff Johnson, a former resident of Covington, has been named Siemens National AP teacher of the year.

Johnson attended Ficquett and Porterdale Elementary Schools and Cousins Middle. According to his biography, it was during his time in these schools that he discovered his love for science and the arts. He graduated from Newton High School before attending Duke University, Georgia Southern University, University of Alabama, Birmingham and Shoals Marine Laboratory of Cornell University. His training is in biophysics with a focus in enzyme kinetics.

He currently teachers AP physics, IB physics and introductory physics at Hoover High School in Hoover, Al. He was originally Siemens' State Teacher of the Year, and award which "recognizes exemplary teaching and enthusiastic dedication to AP both inside and outside the classroom."

ohnson is the son of Mildred Johnson of Lakeview Drive in Covington.
