Samuel Jones Jordan

Samuel Jones Jordan, 89, died Friday, Feb. 12 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

He was born May 17, 1920 in Porterdale, as the son of Carl C. Jordan and Pearl Kinney Jordan. He has resided in Virginia for more than 55 years. He was married Nov. 24, 1942, to Aleta Harrell Jordan, who predeceased him in 2007.

He was educated in Covington and received an engineering degree from Georgia Tech in 1950. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Corps during WWII. Mr. Jordan was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and a member of First Baptist Church of Danville.

Mr. Jordan was Director of Corporate Engineering for Dan River Inc. and retired in 1983 after 27 years of service. He was a member of American Legion Post 1097, a Master Mason, a Shriner, an Elk, a Boy Scout leader, a past president of Danville Engineering Society, a member of the Institute Electric, Electronic Engineers and a Lion. He was an avid aviation enthusiast, an instrument rated pilot, a member of the AOPA, and Southside Pilot Club.

Mr. Jordan is survived by three daughters, Pamela J. Gurley (Dennis) of Loudon, Tenn., Sally J. Killough (Milo) of Seneca, S.C., and Jan J. Richardson (Randy) of Danville, Va. He is also survived by six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today, Feb. 14 at Townes Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Stephen Cook officiating. Funeral services will also be held at 11 a.m.Tuesday, Feb. 15 from Striffler-Hamby Funeral Home, Columbus. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the chapel; at other times the family will be at the home of Jan and Randy Richardson, 456 S. Woodberry Avenue, Danville. Interment will follow in Park Hill Cemetery in Columbus.
