No traffic fatalities recorded during holiday weekend

Newton County had several vehicle accidents and DUI arrests over the holiday but no fatalities were recorded between Dec. 31-Jan. 1.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office logged 11 car accidents and 10 DUI arrests in the 24-hour period, according to NCSO Public Information Officer Lt. Tyrone Oliver.

Georgia State Patrol has released their numbers from the 78-hours between 6 p.m. Dec. 29 through 12 a.m. Jan. 3 and had less car accidents in the state than anticipated in 2009. The GSP estimated 2,330 crashed and only worked 2,116, that number is now drastically from 2008 when the number of crashes was 2,998.

There were 474 crashes with injuries — less then the estimated 1,004 and down from 1,222 in 2008. And although there were no fatalities accidents in the county, there were 11 in the state, down from 2008’s 22.
