Owner: drag strip ‘not going to be a nuisance’

Donnie Clack, the man behind the much-disputed proposed drag strip in Social Circle, believes the facility would only help to benefit the area.

"We don’t want to move forward with a project that is going to be a nuisance," Clack said.

The proposed drag strip would be located south of Social Circle on Highway 278, just North of Interstate 20. Clack will be petitioning the Social Circle City Council on Tuesday night to pass a motion to re-zone the land from agricultural to commercial.

The thought of a drag strip in the quiet town has many residents alarmed, and have claimed that the facility is not in the city’s best interest.

Clack, who owns property in Social Circle, disagrees.

"We’re working with the city and with the county," Clack said. "There are so many variables – grading, walls, trees, you name it – that we have to consider. We definitely are trying to be environmentally friendly and keep the noise down."

Clack stated that it was too soon to guess how much tax revenue the site would bring in, but stressed it would also bring money into the city by brining in guests who would stay at local motels, go to local restaurants and shop in the downtown area. He said the site would have enough parking for a maximum of a couple thousand people.

He also stated that the site would be used for more than just races. Taking an example for the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers, the site would include a covered arena that could be the home of rodeos, concerts, dog and horse shows and more.

Residents who oppose the site have voiced concerns of issues based on noise, possible drug and alcohol use, increased traffic and diminished property values.

The Council will decide whether land will be re-zoned on Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 6:30 p.m. Clack will be speaking, and residents who support or oppose the project will be invited to speak to the council.
